What is a Unix Timestamp?

A Unix timestamp is a number that represents a specific point in time as the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC.

Unix timestamps are widely used by operating systems, databases, APIs, programming languages and distributed systems to represent dates and times consistently.

Seconds vs. milliseconds

Unix timestamps are commonly represented in either seconds or milliseconds.

For example, a timestamp such as 1725400000 represents seconds, while 1725400000000 represents milliseconds.

Tip: If you receive a timestamp from an API and it has approximately 10 digits, it is probably in seconds. Values around 13 digits are usually milliseconds.

Why are Unix timestamps useful?

Because the value is independent of a specific date format, Unix timestamps are convenient when exchanging time information between different systems, programming languages and geographic regions.

UTC and local time

Unix timestamps are based on UTC. The same timestamp can therefore be displayed differently depending on the local timezone of the computer or application displaying it.

ISO 8601

ISO 8601 is another common way to represent dates and times. An example is 2026-09-10T12:30:00.000Z.
